6 principles for planning better outdoor brand activations
After delivering the UK first bematrix pop-OUT activation for More Nutrition, Equinox shares six principles for planning better outdoor brand experiences.

Equinox Group has delivered the first UK live event installation of bematrix pop-OUT, creating a high-impact outdoor activation for More Nutrition at Taste of London 2026.

It is a strong first, but the better question for brand teams in not “who did it first?”

It is “what can we learn from it?”

Outdoor activations now need to do more than evert. They need to attract attention, support sampling, hospitality or live engagement, create useful content, give teams a workable space and leave brands with something more valuable than a set of post-event images.

Our More Nutrition project showed how bematrix’s pop-OUT system can support that ambition. The system brought a lighter structure, quicker installation, improved durability and greater reuse. Equinox brought the creative direction, production control and live delivery thinking needed to turn that platform into a brand-specific experience.

For brands planning festivals, sampling campaigns, product launches, fan zones, pop-up retail or outdoor hospitality, here are six principles for getting more from your next outdoor activation.

What better planning looks like

1. Give your outdoor activation a clear role

Before choosing a structure, define the goal.

Is the activation there to drive product trial, build awareness, create content, host guests, capture data, support retail or launch something new?

The answer should shape everything that follows, from the footprint to site delivery.

Too many outdoor activations begin with the available space. Better ones begin with audience behaviour.

For More Nutrition at Taste of London, the activation needed to become a clear destination in a busy food and drink festival environment. It had to be visible from a distance, simple to understand as people approached and practical for sampling once they arrived.

That is a stronger starting point than “we need a branded unit.”

It gives the design purpose.

Before design starts, agree the primary job of the space: trial, hospitality, retail, awareness, content, data capture or product education. If everything is the priority, the layout will become confused.

2. Design outdoor activations around real movement

Outdoor activations are rarely experienced from one perfect angle.

People arrive from different directions. Some are actively looking for the brand, while others are passing by with food in one hand and a phone in the other. Some stop because they see a queue. Others avoid the queue completely. Some want to sample quickly. Others want to ask questions.

Good outdoor activation design accounts for that reality.

Before the space is built, the experience needs to answer practical questions.

  • What does someone see first?
  • Where do they enter?
  • Where does sampling happen?
  • Can the team work without blocking the experience?
  • Is there enough space for people to pause without causing bottlenecks?
  • What will the brand look like in visitor photos and videos?

These details influence whether the activation feels confident or chaotic.

A structure can give you the physical space. However, the experience depends on how well that space handles people.

Map the visitor journey in three stages: seen from a distance, understood on approach, used at close range. If the activation fails at any one of those stages, it will underperform.

3. Plan outdoor activations for reuse and local deployment

pop-OUT gives brands a more flexible base for outdoor campaigns.

The system has been engineered to reduce weight, improve durability and extend the working life of the structure. As a result, it supports quicker installation and greater reuse across future campaigns.

For brands running more than one outdoor activation, the question is not only whether the structure can be used again. The real question is how easily it can be deployed where the next campaign needs it.

That is where Equinox’s asset hub network adds practical value. Because Equinox owns its own bematrix stock, assets can be held and deployed closer to the point of delivery. This helps reduce transport costs, minimise transport-related emissions and make multi-location activations easier to plan.

For our clients, that changes the conversation. A modular outdoor activation is no longer just something that can be reused. It becomes a campaign asset that can move, adapt and scale with more control.

The core structure can carry forward. Meanwhile, the finish, message and experience can evolve.

Decide what should remain fixed and what should change. The structure, storage logic and core footprint may stay consistent. The graphics, messaging, sampling setup and content moments can flex by campaign.

4. Keep modular outdoor activations from becoming generic

Modular systems are useful because they bring control. They can reduce time pressure, simplify planning and support a more efficient build.

However, they also come with a risk.

If the system becomes the creative idea, the final result can feel too familiar. It may be well made and on brand, but it will not necessarily give people a reason to stop.

That is where our role becomes important.

For More Nutrition, pop-OUT was the platform, not the finished answer. We shaped the system around the brand, the audience and the setting at Taste of London. The aim was to use the advantages of the evolved system without losing the character of the brand experience.

This is the point every brand should hold onto.

Modular should make the build smarter. It should not make the brand feel smaller.

The best results come when the structure supports the idea, rather than replacing it.

Identify the ownable brand elements before choosing finishes. That might be colour, product display, lighting, tone of voice, serving ritual, photo moment or staff interaction.

5. Protect the finish and flow of your outdoor activation

Outdoor activations can lose quality in the handover between idea and delivery.

The concept looks strong. The render feels convincing. Then the practical decisions start arriving: access, install time, storage, staff movement, product handling, weather, power, graphics, visibility, site rules and live operation.

Those details are not glamorous, but they shape the final experience.

That is why we keep creative, production, fabrication and delivery closely connected. We test the idea against real conditions early, instead of protecting it in a deck until it meets site reality.

For clients, that reduces risk.

For agencies and partners, it helps protect the creative intent.

For the audience, it means the activation feels more considered when they step into it.

The More Nutrition activation was not about placing a modular system on site and dressing it. It was about taking an evolved outdoor system and making it work as a live consumer experience.

Review the design with production before final sign off. Check access, staffing, storage, stock movement, weather exposure, visitor flow and the view from key approach points.

Sampling, service and visitor flow were planned into the experience, helping the activation work in real event conditions.

6. Think beyond the outdoor activation date

A good activation performs during the event.

A stronger activation has value after it.

The value might be physical reuse, content, a proven format for the next campaign or a clearer understanding of how the audience responds to the brand in a live environment.

So, instead of asking what needs to be built for one date, ask what the brand could learn, reuse and improve after the event.

Instead of asking what needs to be built for one date, ask what the brand could learn, reuse and improve after the event.

  • What can stay the same next time?
  • What should change?
  • What parts of the structure can carry forward?
  • What parts of the experience need to flex?
  • How can the next activation be better because this one existed?

That is a more useful way to spend the budget.

What the UK first proves for outdoor activations

The More Nutrition project gave pop-OUT its first UK live event installation. More importantly, it showed how the system can be used in a real festival environment without reducing the brand experience to a template.

The UK first pop-OUT 2.0 installation gave More Nutrition a flexible outdoor brand space built for sampling, visibility and reuse.

“This project gave us a new way to build outdoors without watering down the brand experience. pop-OUT brings a lighter structure, faster installation and greater reuse, but Equinox brings the design thinking, the production detail and the nerve to do something with it. That is where it becomes more than a system. That is where it becomes a brand moment.”

Equinox Group

For bematrix, the project showed the system doing its job in the right hands: keeping the practical benefits of modularity and reuse, while allowing the brand experience to lead.

“pop-OUT was created to bring modular freedom into outdoor environments. Seeing Equinox Group introduce it to the UK live event market is a strong moment for the system. Their approach shows how pop-OUT can combine a lighter, more durable structure with the practical benefits of modularity, flexibility and reuse.”

A better brief creates a better outdoor activation

The lesson from Taste of London is not simply that pop-OUT is lighter, quicker to install and more reusable.

The lesson is that outdoor activations work best when they are planned with the same care as any other high value brand experience.

Start with the audience. Define the role of the activation. Design around real behaviour. Build in future value. Then protect the creative intent through production and delivery.

That is how an outdoor activation becomes more than a temporary structure.

It becomes a brand asset.

For brands planning festivals, sampling campaigns, product launches, fan zones, pop-up retail or outdoor hospitality, Equinox Group can help create outdoor activations that work on site, support the campaign and give the brand more value from the investment. Contact us to learn more.
